This week, we walked around Barcelona to understand it’s relationship to the market place. One of the most popular market places of today is the Santa Caterina Market right outside the old city of Barcelona.
What used to be a monastery became the city’s first covered market place after the monastery was burned to the ground. The market place was then renovated in the late 1990s and early 2000s by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue architects. The new building consists of layers upon layers of information in design, from reusing old foundations and trusses, to the hexagon tiles on the roof, to the plats of crates on the exterior.
Some say that this building was designed with too much thought to the site’s past lives, others enjoy the cacophony of layers in the design. In the end, the new market place is a series of planes that shelter vendors inside, reminiscent of years past when the markets sat just outside the old Roman walls of the city of Barcino.
